Community Supported Primary Care

  • A Medical Revolution

Our modern medical system has made amazing advances in technology and medicine, but patients often feel dissatisfied. They are given short appointments with doctors, so they have to focus on a single issue, treat only those symptoms, and most of their questions still don’t get answered. Insurance is getting more and more expensive, while covering less and less. Deductibles are going up, just like office visits and copays. The current system demands that doctors become masters at quick fixes, but that is not an effective approach for maintaining good health. Doctors often spend more time on a computer filling out charts than they do caring for patients, and an elaborate staff is typically employed just for billing. With all of these factors at play, it’s no wonder most people avoid going to the doctor unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Generation ago, doctors knew their patients, families and community members well. They might be seen making clinic, home or hospital visits to people in need with black bag in hand. Whole Family Medicine seeks to restore that Nurse Practitioner - Patient relationship. Patients and care providers are empowered by relationship; time spent together creates road maps to healing that are meaningful and effective. This is supported by the advantage of computer and internet technology allowing 24-7 access to online patient portals for viewing records, receiving test results, scheduling appointments, and exchanging secure messages with your Nurse Practitioner.

Neighborhoods across the country are returning to the values of relationship based services. For example, in community supported agriculture (CSA), people pay a flat monthly fee for a membership that supports a farmer for a growing season. In return they get a higher quality product and support a local business. Costs associated with the "middle man" - big chain grocery stores - are eliminated. Could the same model be applied to health care? Yes!

  • Community Supported Medicine

The ancient Chinese system of care made sense. Healthy patients contributed to their doctor on a monthly basis and paid no fee when they were sick. The philosophy was that a doctor’s job was to keep the community well! Health problems are like most others – they are best treated early, before they turn into more serious issues.

Whole Family Medicine is funded by community membership fees. By withdrawing from the insurance model, Selah is able to provide high quality care in an accessible, affordable, natural manner. You may be a patient of Whole Family Medicine regardless of your insurance status. Families who are paying out of pocket for their medical care (because they are uninsured or carry a very high deductible), will appreciation the security of knowing that they may visit Selah as often as needed. For those with insurance (enjoy the same privilege as uninsured ), services are covered by the monthly membership fee, while other health expenses - like hospital, emergency room, or specialist fees - are billed to your usual insurance plan.
